Health education, a key component in promoting the health of all children: making the link between local needs and global objectives in New Caledonia

Résumé

At a pivotal moment in New Caledonia's history, both socially and politically, the territory faces pressing questions about its societal structure and citizenship. With significant cultural diversity and marked social and health inequalities, challenges related to the well-being of its populations require urgent attention. Schools play a central role in this process, and health education emerges as a key lever for promoting individual and collective well-being while addressing the country’s unique health issues. Our research explores the potential of health education in New Caledonian preschools to lay the foundations for responsible, autonomous health behaviors. By equipping future citizens to actively promote their own health and that of their communities, schools contribute to sustainable well-being within a global health framework. Through participatory research with 48 teachers from diverse contexts (urban, rural, tribal), we co-developed between 2021 and 2024 teaching ressources including a multicultural handbook tailored to local needs. This approach demonstrates the necessity of adapting educational practices to specific contexts while aligning with global health objectives. It also highlights how such solutions can serve as models for other regions facing challenges of cultural diversity and equitable access to health services. The co-construction process strengthens teachers’ professional skills, with visible impacts on educational practices and local stakeholders. Teachers’ investment and the tangible benefits for pupils contribute to the effective management of educational and human resources, fostering inclusive pedagogical approaches that make health-related skills visible from early childhood. In New Caledonia's multicultural context, fostering citizenship based on solidarity and mutual respect promotes shared well-being. By addressing local disparities in health and education, this initiative contributes to the broader goals of social justice, health for all, and sustainable development. Providing tailored health education tools in preschools creates a foundation for long-term awareness of health and well-being issues, responding to both local challenges and global health imperatives.
