Ellipsis in answers to polar questions in Czech
Ellipse dans les réponses aux questions fermées en tchèque
Résumé
In this presentation I discuss the property of Czech to use a finite verb to answer both affirmative and negative polar questions. Following Homberg (2001, 2011), I argue that answers echoing a verb of the question are derived by sentential ellipsis after moving the finite verb or the remnant VP to the Focus projection in CP domain. I also also argue that answering particles always express the polarity of the answer : (i) the affirmative particle can combine with an affirmative verb or with a negative VP, (ii) the negative particle can combine with a negative verb or an affirmative VP.
