Combining categories of crossbred females to improve the overall performance of the dairy cattle herd : how to benefit from genetic diversity induced by the use of three breed crossbreeding into purebred Holstein herd ?

Résumé

There is a renewed interest in rotational crossbreeding in Western countries to improve reproductive performances of dairy cattle cows, especially for Holstein (HO) breed. To our knowledge, few studies are interested in the impact on the overall performances at herd scale of genetic diversification, which is involved in the transition of herd towards rotational crossbreeding. Our hypothesis is there are herd compositions of crossbred categories that optimize its multi-criteria performance. The objective of the present study was twofold: (i) to define and compare performances of various categories of crossbred females and (ii) to assess the best combinations of these categories within a herd to optimize its performances. We used milk record data of 14 French commercial dairy crossbred herds from 2009 to 2018. HO breed was the initial breed, from which sampled dairy farmers managed rotational crossbreeding. The dataset was made up of 4476 lactations from 2010 cows, for which milk yield and contents and fertility performances were available. First, aiming at getting out from crossbreeding schemes, we defined categories of crossbred females [a; b] according to two indicators: a, the percentage of Holstein genes from 25 to 100% and b, the theoretical value of heterosis from 0 to 100%. Secondly, we used linear models to compare performances’ profiles of each category of crossbred females. We showed for example that 305-days milk yield was greatest for HO (7513 kg) and lower for F1 (7289 kg) and 3-ways G2 (6697 kg). In a third step, based on the mean performances we built multi-criteria performances’ profiles for each category. We simulated all herds’ compositions as combinations of the different categories following a design of experiment approach and modelled the resulting multi-criteria performances for each herd composition. Then we assessed the best herd compositions.
