This study deals with the conception of hearing in the linguistic thinking in the German speaking area. After some observations concerning the different approaches and their evolution in the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century, this text concentrates on the renew interest in the sense of hearing in the second half of the 18th century and more specifically in philosophical and german grammars. The influence of the sensualist and romantic thinking is discussed and shown in some reference works, like the great grammar of german published in 1782 (2 vol.) of J. Chr. Adelung who is generally considered as the actual founder of the tradition of school grammar, and in works of J.S. Vater, a renowned orientalist and slavist and author of two general grammars (1801, 1805). Finally, these approaches a confronted with the general grammars of A.F. Bernhardi (1801-1803, 1805) which proposes not only a reel ‘synthesis of the linguistic and philosophical thought’ of the previous decades, the Kantian criticism inclusive (Schlieben-Lange & Weydt 1988) but he also exceeds his precursors by the integration of a sort of ‘philosophy of sounds’. This philosophy, although founded on the transcendental Kantian approach of the human cognitive system where the sensible world is not accessible and language largely absent, attributes a crucial and pivotal importance to the sense of hearing regarding the origin of language, the evolution of languages, the individual linguistic comprehension and production and the fulfilment of human reason and arts.
