Degradation of organic pollutants employing various photocatalytic systems

Résumé

The photoinduced degradation of Monuron, an herbicide, was studied in three various systems producing hydroxyl radicals: in the presence of Fe(III)Cit complex, in a TiO2 suspension and in the combined system of Fe(III)Cit / TiO2. The main goal of the study was to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. The distribution and photoactivity of the complex species highly depended on pH. The kinetics of Monuron degradation photoinduced by the complex followed two steps with different sources of *OH: 1) photolysis of the complex; 2) iron photoredox cycle. The presence of TiO2 improved the efficiency of the ferric citrate system at acid pH; at neutral pH, the efficiency of the system was totally inhibited. The concentration of oxygen and pH were the most important factors of degradation efficiency in the system containing iron citrate. Moreover, with a semi-operational system employing TiO2 photocatalysis, the effect of organic solvent on the degradation of 4-chlorophenol in water was examined.
